- Abstract:
- A Preacher's Manifesto presents ten commitments that should drive biblical preaching. These ten commitments will guide pastors in creating their preaching calendar, help steer their sermon preparation, and remind them of the vital place preaching occupies in the local church. The commitments include topics ranging from pastoral theology ("preaching as a function of soul-watching"), hermeneutics ("not allow a selected topic to override the meaning of the biblical Text"), and pastoral ministry ("preach as though my spiritual life and the spiritual lives of my parishioners depend on it"). A Preacher's Manifesto will challenge assumptions, cultivate new commitments, and bring about changes in preaching for the sake of enlarging God's reputation in the Church

- Abstract:
- Church planting networks (CPNs) play a vital role in equipping and supporting pastors engaged in church planting efforts. However, little research has examined senior pastors' experiences within and aspirations for CPNs. This study explored how senior pastors engage with CPNs. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with six senior pastors in the Presbyterian Church in America who have been actively involved in the Southwest Church Planting Network for over a decade. Four research questions guided this research: (1) What benefits do senior pastors experience when they engage with church-planting networks? (2) What challenges do senior pastors face when they engage with church-planting networks? (3) How do senior pastors navigate the challenges they face when they engage with church-planting networks? (4) What are senior pastors’ hopes for engagement with church-planting networks? The literature review examined lessons from the Book of Acts for contemporary CPN development, and research on network dynamics and organizational hierarchies. The key benefits identified included camaraderie, compelling vision, and access to funding. Primary challenges included diminished relational connections over time, loss of aspirational leadership, and complacency. Pastors navigated challenges through singular loyalty to the CPN. Hopes for the future centered around prayer, compelling rationale for planting, unified philosophy, clear metrics, new models, sustainable funding, dedicated leadership, training and coaching. These findings provide valuable insights for CPN leaders seeking to enhance senior pastor involvement. To address these challenges, eleven practical recommendations are offered, focusing on network partnership, collaboration and missional engagement.

- Abstract:
- The purpose of this study was to explore how pastors design church worship services to help congregants embody the mission of God in every area of life and the tensions that impede this connection. Many Christians in the United States have separated corporate worship from mission. They have replaced God’s call to love and serve others with an individualistic approach to the Christian faith. This study utilized a basic qualitative design using semi-structured interviews with six pastors from various denominations who regularly plan worship services and care about Chistian mission. The interviews focused on gathering data with four research questions about worship practices and the mission of God. These questions guided the interviews, and the data was sorted using the constant comparative method. The literature review focused on four key areas to understand the connection between worship and mission, including a biblical framework of Christian mission, a biblical understanding of salvation, the connection between salvation and worship, and three culture shifts that have affected corporate worship services. This study concluded that worship services play a vital role in helping congregants embody the mission of God in the world. Biblical worship influences every area of life and compels Christians to practice all-level discipleship. This study recommends that pastors see discipleship as the primary purpose of the worship service. Ideally, this mindset will bring about spiritual growth for the believer and leave space for potential Christians to encounter the Triune God.

- Abstract:
- The purpose of this study was to discover how senior pastors create organizational continuity through their succession plans. Churches face significant challenges when senior pastors retire or transition without succession plans. This study concluded that there are ten significant findings and ten actions that can reduce congregational anxiety and enhance the organizational continuity during a succession. The study found that congregations should be understood as emotional systems and that senior pastor transitions cause organizational anxiety. Self-differentiated leaders are essential to a healthy succession planning process, due to the emotional nature of the congregation. Succession plans that create organizational continuity must be aligned with a church’s mission, vision, and values. The most important person in the succession planning process is the transitioning senior pastor. Senior pastors who remove significant barriers for their successor’s benefit have more succession success than those that do not. Contrary to popular belief, differentiated senior pastors can remain on staff after their transition in a reduced role. The longer the tenure of the transitioning senior pastor, the longer the succession planning process ought to be. Ten hiring practices were recommended to alleviate the challenge of finding and hiring a successor: hire a culture fit, hire and develop an internal candidate, hire a young generalist, hire a successor years before their transition, and hire a succession consultant. Within the succession plan, essential elements emerged as key pieces of the succession plan: creating a timeline, teaching team, emergency succession plan, communication plan, and celebration plan for the transition.
